Student Spotlight Series: MedLite

Author: Grace Li

We’re excited to have interviewed the leaders behind MedLite, a youth organization dedicated to educate youth on health topics through short-form content. In this interview, we discuss their mission, goals, and their thoughts on health topics.

Q1. Please introduce yourself and the mission of MedLite.

MedLite is a youth-led STEM initiative that breaks down medical concepts and studies for students through short-form educational content. As the page has grown, we’ve also started focusing more on helping students understand how medical studies are designed and research findings are interpreted. Our ultimate goal is to help teens become more informed and critical consumers of health information they encounter online.

Q2. What inspired you to apply to Med Lite and contribute to healthcare education through social media?

Social media has become one of the main ways young people encounter health information online. Unfortunately, many posts overly-simplify or misinterpret complex scientific research. At the same time, research terms can be too confusing for students to understand.

I was interested in contributing to MedLite because it focuses on making scientific ideas accessible by explaining the science behind it in a clear and engaging way. We hope to help students better understand how research connects to real-world health decisions.

Q3. What are some common misconceptions about healthcare that you think social media can help correct?

One major misconception is that scientific findings are always straightforward. Despite it involving numbers and data, research is often characterized by uncertainty, limitations, and ongoing investigation.

Another misconception is that popular health claims are automatically reliable. Many headlines simplify studies or take results out of context. Social media and organizations like ours can actually play a positive role by helping people understand how research works and encouraging them to think critically about the information they see online.

Q4. What is a health topic that you are passionate about that you hope to spread awareness for in the near future?

One health topic we are particularly interested in exploring further is sleep science and circadian rhythms. Many students and young adults, especially in the current “hustle-based” era, underestimate how important sleep is for brain function, mental and physical health, even though research supports how sleep patterns affect learning, mood, and long-term wellbeing.

We hope to help explain the science behind sleep, such as how blue light exposure from devices influences sleep latency, so that students better understand the biological reasons behind health tips.
