Interview with Artist Seaomnde (Full Interview)

Author: Nicole Tan

Thank you to the artist Seaomnde for joining me today for this interview! She is an artist on Instagram, who does both digital and traditional art.

Q1: Please introduce yourself!

Hi, I’m Seaomnde. I’m a secondary school student, and love drawing for an online community and for family and friends. I started with traditional art, but have expanded to digital art on the platform ibisPaint X.

Q2: When were you first introduced to art?

I was first introduced to art when I was six years old, when my mom signed me up for an art class. I really liked copying things that I saw and drawing them on paper. I liked the Geronimo Stilton books as a kid, so I would copy pictures from them and draw them. I loved coloring things as well, and seeing which colors looked best together and how to pair them in a way that would give an emotion.

Q3: Why do you pursue art? What about it interests you?

I pursue art because I love the creativity involved with it. I love being creative and thinking of my own characters and creating stories for them through art. I also love art as a way to appreciate my favorite shows and characters by drawing them. It’s really fun to reimagine or to draw a character in your art style, and I love the idea of composition as a way of giving certain personality traits and as a way to show different sides of characters.

Q4: What is something unique about the online art community?

When I post some of my art on Instagram, it always warms my art to see that some really enjoy the art that I do, and it’s amazing to see how others may be inspired from the art I’ve posted. I’ve saved some of the comments on my phone because they made me so happy.

Q5: What is a challenge that you have faced as an artist?

One challenge that I have faced is getting a consistent posting schedule. Since I am currently a student, it’s been challenging to balance schoolwork with art, especially since for digital art, I have to draw on my phone since I do not have a tablet. Drawing on my phone makes the art I make take so much longer, and it means that I have use a huge portion of my day if I want to draw and post an artwork. In addition, something else that has been challenging is social media itself. With arts, to gain a following, many have to post short form videos. However, I simply do not have a lot of time to work on making the art as well as social media content and videos.

Now, we will move onto the art-walkthrough portion of this interview, where we will be hearing from Seaomnde, and will be learning more about her artistic process and explanations of specific pieces she has produced.

Piece 1: DTIYS (Draw This In Your Style) for @miyurains 13k

For this art piece, I was participating in miyurains’ 13k DTIYS, to draw her original character (OC), Radella. She was described to be a fairy, so I wanted to play into that theme and have her in the forest with a rabbit. This was my first artwork that was fully rendered, and I believe spent over 50 hours on this piece. I remember I kept on redrawing her face because it didn’t look right, and re-rendering the hair because it looked too “soft”. Since it was my first time doing a fully rendered piece, I played around a lot with different tools to try to make it look the best it could. I do wish I worked more on the background, since it looks quite lacking, but overall I’m happy with this piece!

Also, I’m very happy to say that I was chosen to be featured on her winners post, and although I didn’t win, I’m really grateful that my artwork caught miyurains’ eye!

Piece 2: Childe from Genshin Impact

For this drawing, I drew Childe from the game Genshin Impact. I also spent a lot of time working on the face in this drawing, and I’m really happy with the result! I think I struggled the most with the anatomy and this certain angel in particular. Also, for the hair, it was originally a lot less vibrant, but I wanted to make it look more colorful and for it to stand out more, so I added streaks of gold and pink to make the hair look better. This is definitely one of my favorite pieces and I’m really happy with it, though it would have been nice if it had more action or had a background.

Piece 3: Luka from “Alien Stage”

Finally, this piece was inspired by a scene from an animated online series called “Alien Stage”, which you can find on YouTube. One of the characters, named Luka, is the focus of this piece. Inspired by a frame from Round 7, I drew this piece. I really had a lot of fun with the colors in this artwork, and loved the blue glare that was reflected on his face in the original scene. Also, I think I stepped it up in terms of composition and background in comparison to my previous artwork, which I am very happy with, seeing my growth. Overall, I really like this artwork.

Thank you, Seaomnde, for joining me today! I loved learning more about you and you artwork. Make sure to follow her on Instagram, at the handle @seaomnde.
