Jenny: In this interview, we are joined by Vivian, a current high school senior. Thank you so much for having this interview with me!
Vivian: No problem at all! I’m glad to be here.
Jenny: Well, let’s start with a burning question that many high schoolers may have: how bad really is senioritis?
Vivian: Oh, it’s bad. [laughs] Actually, I don’t want to scare anyone with that statement. But now that high school is nearing an end, it’s made me start to reflect on my high school experience and what I’ve gotten out of it, and my near future in college.
And what I’ve drawn from hours of agonizing reflections is that I wish I could have done more in high school, and I wish I had more time before heading off to college. It’s funny, how once there’s a timer put on something, you start to appreciate it all-the-more. Even though I spent a lot of high school complaining about the workload, and other things, I definitely will miss this period of time, and the freedom of my youth. I feel as though high school is romanticized in pop-culture as a time of rebellion and freedom, and when I think back on my experience in high school, it feels far more mundane.
But all of this is to say, high school is what you make of it. I think it’s important to try to make sure you have no regrets from high school, so take that party invitation, or hang out with your friends more often. Make memories!
Jenny: That’s definitely great advice. Speaking of the romanticization of high school in media and culture, could you, in-specific, talk about aspects of high school in shows or movies that isn’t really true in reality?
Vivian: Hmmm. Well high school is definitely not Euphoria. [laughs] At least my high school, that is. I do think that a part of high school that has let me down is the romance aspect. I mean, while I did have a couple of minor dabbles in romance, I never got into a real relationship, and I honestly don’t know that many that did either.
Jenny: That’s interesting- could you perhaps elaborate on your romantic experiences?
Vivian: Oh, you wouldn’t want to know, there’s really not much. [laughs]
Jenny: Ah okay. Then we’ll move on to the next question! So, what are your plans for a senior quote?
Vivian: Great question! I’m still thinking, but I think a top contender is “Cool cool cool, no doubt no doubt”, which is a phrase from my favorite show, Brooklyn 99. It’s just fun to say, you know?
Jenny: Wait, I love Brooklyn 99! Who’s your favorite character?
Vivian: Oooo, I love all the cast, but I would definitely have to say Captain Raymond Holt, played by Andre Braugher.
Jenny: Great choice: he’s my favorite too. I love his stoic humor.
Vivian: Yes. Also, love Cheddar.
Jenny: Our fluffy boy! So, on a completely different note, how would you describe your college application experience, and what advice do you have for rising juniors?
Vivian: My biggest piece of advice is to start early. Make sure to start in the summer before senior year, because it just makes the process so much easier if you have everything ready well before the deadline. You definitely don’t want to be cramming your 40 essays a couple weeks before the deadline, so just get started early, and set yourself up for success.
Also, for college essays, make sure to think a lot about the theming and message of your essays, and to highlight your unique experiences!
Jenny: This was so helpful!
Well, that’s all I have for today. Thanks for coming on for this interview!
Vivian: This was great! I’m always glad to just talk about myself. [laughs]
Jenny: [laughs] Again, thank you, and have a nice day!
Vivian: You as well.
