I had the pleasure of interviewing Little Lab Coats as part of our Student Spotlight Series! We are joined by its founder, Felicity, to discuss their mission and how they make STEM more accessible for all.
Q1: Please introduce yourself and Little Lab Coats!
My name is Felicity, and I’m a high schooler from New England. My organization is Little Lab Coats, an interview-based podcast designed to give insight on different STEM careers and what working in a STEM field is actually like.
Q2: What inspired you to start Little Lab Coats, and how have your initial motivations influenced your approach in leading Little Lab Coats?
I decided to start Little Lab Coats because I wanted to create a place where like-minded high schoolers and future scientists could learn about different careers together. As the world of STEM is so wide-ranging, I thought that by learning about specific careers would be a great way to help students who like science decide what career path is right for them. Sharing this information in the form of a podcast and on social media seemed like a great option.
Q3: You’ve interviewed a multitude of STEM professionals and changemakers: how do you approach selecting interviewee’s and topics?
As of now, my podcast is still pretty small, so I select podcast topics and interviewees based on people that I know and people in my community that work in STEM. In the future I plan to bring on experts from fields I don’t have a direct connection with and or like-minded STEM professionals posting online.
Q4: What is a goal that you have for Little Lab Coats in the upcoming year?
One of my goals for Little Lab Coats is to reach a wider audience and grow my following so that I can share all the wonderful expert information I learn with more people! I hope it will help people make informed career decisions.
Q5: Who is your intended audience, and how does that shape your interview process?
My intended audience of students (of all ages!) guides me in formulating my questions for each interview in that I aim to cover a wide range of sub-topics within each career and episode. As a student myself, I think having an overview of the career would be helpful rather than super specific details, although those are certainly very interesting! I create my episodes accordingly.
Q6: What are podcast episodes that listeners can tune into and look forward to in the near-future? Have any of your interviews changed or challenged a view on a profession that you had beforehand?
Currently, I have episodes up from engineering and engineering-adjacent fields. In the near future a nursing episode will be launching, so if engineering isn’t really your jam I recommend you check it out once it drops 1/10/26! For my own assumptions about different scientists professions, my personal thoughts have yet to be directly challenged, although I’ve learned so much behind the scenes info on the professions I’ve deep-dove into that I now have much better ideas of what different careers are all about!
Thank you so much to Felicity and Little Lab Coats for doing this interview with us! Their next episode launches on February 14th, make sure to check it out!
